LAWE Indonesia was founded by five women that share the same passion for Indonesia traditional hand-woven textiles, especially for the Javanese textile, “lurik”.  Originating in ancient Java, this simple striped textile worn by Palace courtiers is actually steeped in symbolism and meaning. Unfortunately, traditional hand-loom “lurik” weavers are disappearing considering their lack of competitiveness with modern industrial fabric producers. Sixteen years ago, LAWE began to transform traditional hand-woven fabric into innovative, colorful, functional modern products, spurring sales of “lurik” textiles and breathing life into a struggling tradition. Today LAWE organizes more than 100 artisans. Sharing their time and talent with other weaving groups, they have since even extended their work beyond the island of Java.

EBAN WATAN -The women of Dobo, Sikka, Flores, Nusa Tenggara Timur organized themselves as an ikat weaving group in 2003 with 39 members. At this time, the weaving tradition was in decline as many people had left the village to become migrant workers. But working far away from home, also brought problems and soon many were back in the village having lost much of their weaving knowledge.  Kanisius Ani or “Oom Anis” as he is fondly called, a village leader, got to work on knowledge transfer, establishing also a weaving house for the women. Soon the weaving group EBAN WATAN was formed. Dobo textiles are distinct, especially with motifs symbolizing dragons, insects, butterflies, plaited bamboo, and a mythical boat among other symbols. The global pandemic has meant limited markets for the weavers group made worse by the Asian swine flu.
