Tubular cloths for women of the type èi raja were in the past restricted to ruler families.
The maternal lineage wini Ga Lena was created by an ancestress of the same name, either shortly before of the arrival of the Portuguese in the area (15th Century) or in the first half of the 16th C. Some six generations later a sub-group of wini Ga Lena was created (17th C).The motif ru wèngu (‘cotton plant’) which is rarely found is often identified with this sub-group. It is not clear if the ru wèngu motif was given at the creation of the sub-group or later. However to some weavers the name of the motif is keware kepue (keware = curves, kepue = origin) which tends to identify it with the origin of the subgroup.
